Dr. Nichele Mason

Dr. Buchanan is an educator, educational consultant, and grant writer whose career spans working with children and families in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Towson University, a Master’s degree in Special Education from Coppin State University, and a Ph.D. in Special Education Administration from Gallaudet University.

Dr. Buchanan has extensive experience assessing student performance, developing individualized learning profiles, and supporting diverse learners through evidence-based educational practices. She also provides executive function and professional training support to educators and organizations, equipping teachers and support professionals with strategies that promote student achievement, motivation, behavior, and systemic classroom improvement.

As a senior grant writer and educational consultant with A Word to the Wise Consulting, LLC, Dr. Buchanan serves as a core member of strategic fundraising and communications efforts for nonprofit and for-profit organizations throughout the United States. Her work has supported colleges and universities, arts and cultural institutions, community organizations, and health and human services agencies. She continues to write grants and develop funding strategies that strengthen organizational sustainability and community impact.

In addition to serving on the Board of Sankofa Children’s Museum of African Cultures, Dr. Buchanan currently serves as Chair of the museum’s Fundraising Committee. She has collaborated with a team led by Deborah Mason to help revamp curriculum content for museum visitors, particularly in the area of Central African history and culture. She has also contributed grant writing support and volunteers during museum programs and special events.

Dr. Buchanan has additionally served as a Stay Active Steering Committee member through Johns Hopkins University and currently serves as a board member for Divine Fitness Health and Wellness.
